Inauguration of the surgical unit expansion at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol | Badalona

On 16 January 2026, the new surgical unit at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona was officially inaugurated. Designed by CDB Arquitectura in collaboration with Mario Corea Arquitectura, the project combines spatial clarity and functional efficiency within a five-storey annex spanning nearly 7,000 m².
Completed after two years of construction, with an investment of €29.6 million co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the new facility comprises six high-technology operating theatres, three of which form part of a pioneering robotic surgery cluster, as well as a dedicated endoscopy floor.

Our work focused on organising clinical circulation routes and strengthening the relationship between the care spaces and the people who use them every day. The layout of the surgical and support areas responds to criteria of professional ergonomics and patient safety, while the flexibility of the design enables the facilities to accommodate future technological developments. The result is a building that combines functional rigour with bright, carefully proportioned spaces, reinforcing the hospital’s position as a benchmark for advanced surgery.

The inauguration ceremony, presided over by the President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, highlighted the speed with which the project was delivered and its importance for healthcare provision in Barcelonès Nord, the Maresme and other regions of Catalonia. Illa also praised the collaboration between the architecture, engineering and healthcare teams, which has resulted in spaces that are “brighter, more spacious and with very good views”, contributing to the comfort of both patients and clinical staff.
