Reform and expansion of the surgical block and ICO center of the Josep Trueta Hospital, Girona.

The extension is proposed as a mimetic and forceful volume, of presence provided with the pre-existing general building. This new volume adopts a tectonic treatment with the same texture of the current building avoiding the possible contrast of a new element that, because of its small dimensions in contrast to the general building, allows it to coexist on a small scale.

In the east façade, double-height slats in the facade of floors 1 and 2 conceal the fire evacuation steps, proposing once again a plane in the scale provided to the volumetry that defines the enlargement.

A floor plant at the current level of the general building, light and retroceded from the façade, reflects the uses of the enlargement of the ICO and acts as a “transparent” pillow between the strength of the new volume of the floors 1 and 2 and the ceiling of the current ICO building.

It proposes a structure of basements and Vierendeel steel beams supported on a train of concrete pillars based on the floor of the separation patio of the ICO and the main building and two concrete pilasters on the east facade avoiding to affect the current structure of the building.
